The outcomes also suggest, as a managerial implication, that structuring PMO functions by consulting project teams and trying to support their value-added chain delivers both project performance and team satisfaction. Results suggest that in NPD projects, 'logistic support' activities such as prototype-parts planning and control can help PMOs to reduce tensions in the project´s work climate, because they bring PMO personnel to the value-added chain of the project.

We conducted interviews with project team members and triangulated data from them with direct observation and document analysis data. The purpose was to investigate how PMO functions affect project teams´ satisfaction and vice versa. This research presents an investigation carried out in the final stages of an action research for implementing a PMO to support a new product development (NPD) process in a high-tech company. Companies have created project management offices (PMOs) for that purpose. The adoption of best practices in project management depends on the existence of an infrastructure for supporting project managers and teams. It is stressed that customers need to be more actively involved, that an efficient change management tool should be adopted and socialised, and that the principles of the strategic transformation programme management process should be considered. There also appear to be concerns with the significance of the roles of change management, customer experience, and project management functions in product development. The findings indicate that system capacity takes precedence over customers. A sample of 120 individuals participated in the study. A quantitative approach was undertaken through an online survey questionnaire. The research setting was a leading telecommunications firm in South Africa. The purpose of this study was to identify a course of action to overcome the factors affecting customer experience during product development. A positive impact on project success is also observed.īecause of the recent introduction of several touchpoints that place purchasing power completely in the customer’s hands, product development directly impacts how a customer experiences an organisation. The study reveals many benefits of the proposed model, such as improved communication, faster detection of discrepancies, more effective problem solving, and greater flexibility. The application of the model is presented on a real case example of process development and small batch manufacture of a complex wiring harness. It is designed as a loop of five repetitive steps (macroplan, microplan, iteration activities, review, and retrospective) that are being executed within individual concurrent development loops. In this paper, we propose a new product development model specifically appropriate for SMEs that combines concurrent product development principles with APM elements.

A potential solution to this problem could be in more flexible and value-driven agile project management (APM) approaches, typical of software development. Despite its many benefits, concurrent product development is still based on detailed upfront planning and cannot address the challenges related to today’s ever-growing uncertainty, constantly changing environment, and unstable requirements.

In order to survive in today’s highly competitive global market, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have had to transition from sequential to concurrent product development, which significantly shortens development cycles, reduces costs, and ensures high product quality.
